27A – Reading Reflection No. 3

1) You read about an entrepreneur: I read Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson.
  • What surprised you the most? I was most surprised that the way he began to amass real wealth was due to his Pixar stock, not from Apple.
  • What about the entrepreneur did you most admire? I admired his dedication. Even when he was basically fired from his company, he eventually came back and decided to help, because he was dedicated.
  • What about the entrepreneur did you least admire? I least admired his crazy fruitatarian diets and other weird health things about him. When he had cancer, he refused chemo and tried to beat it naturally or something, which lead to his death.
  • Did the entrepreneur encounter adversity and failure? If so, what did they do about it? Like I said above, he got fired from Apple. After Apple, he created his own company called NeXT, and bought into Pixar. He became a billionaire from these decisions so he did pretty well.
2) What competencies did you notice that the entrepreneur exhibited?
Jobs was a perfectionist to the core, which became a vice at points. He also was great at running Apple. The year before he was reinstated as CEO, Apple suffered a billion dollar loss. The next year, when Jobs returned, they had profits of over 300 million. He was a great businessman.
3) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.
I was confused as to how Jobs became involved with Pixar at all. It just seemed like a very random thing and it is crazy that he made so much money off it.
4) If you were able to ask two questions to the entrepreneur, what would you ask? Why?
I would ask him why he thought his crazy health things would work, and I would ask him if he could give me some stock advice.
5) For fun: what do you think the entrepreneur's opinion was of hard work? Do you share that opinion?
I think Steve Jobs was very motivated by working hard. He was a perfectionist at heart, and he required everything to be up to his very high standards for him to be satisfied.

  1. Michael,
At the beginning of the semester I too read this book. I agree with your statement that you were surprised Jobs was involved heavily with Pixar because I had no idea either. In addition, I think that your questions are interesting because they don't really relate to business but rather personal things that could help you out such as the stocks.

  2. Hi Michael,
I also read this biography for my third reading reflection. I did not know that Steve Jobs accumulated his wealth from Pixar since people mainly associate him with being the inventor of Apple products only. I think it was interesting to see how Steve Jobs got to where he was since so many people use Apple products daily. i definitely learned a lot more about him that I did not know before from reading this.

  3. Hiya Mick,

This is a really good post. I did not read this but I read Shoe Dog by Phil Knight. I have heard about this Steve Jobs guy, but after hearing what you wrote about him, he seemed like a decent guy. However, I do not agree with his holistic medication stuff. Very weird to be honest, almost as weird as this COVID-19 thing. I have heard it is pretty serious and I hope you are staying safe. I recommend you wearing a mask when you go into public places and to keep six feet away from others. Overall, this was a good post. Very nice!

  4. Good Morning Michaeyla,

I really enjoyed reading your post. I decided to read Shoe Dog by Phil Knight. Shoe Dog was a really cool story, too. I did not know that Steve Jobs was involved in Pixar. That really is something, isn't it? I just might have to pick up a copy of this book you read. After you ask Steve Jobs for stock advice can you please tell me, too? Good work on this post.
